Pattern: Original design.
Technique: Hand stitched.
Medium: Hand dyed, printed cotton fabric, and polyester silk.
The centrepiece of the Mandelbrot Lake pulls the eye up and into its depths, and flows down the sides of the bright summer gladioli colours into ripples of gold lava. Long strands of floss and glass beads give a hazy, hot air effect. The little bitty embellishments look like the topping on a pizza so I have placed the work on figurative pizza dough.
The white cotton embroidery floss gives the impression of haze. Here you can see a close up of the furrowed silk polyester. Furrowing is done by stitching down heavily gathered fabric. In this case it has been stitched down with glass beads and embroidery floss.
Silk ribbon is embroidered in loops and french knots with beads scattered around. The edges are outlined with embroidery floss and quilted to give dimension.
The inside of the Mandelbrot Lake is heavily quilted down. Hand dyed cotton surrounds the Lake in gladioli coloured ripples, embroidered with silk ribbon, beads and outlined with embroidery floss.
The binding is heavily stuffed to give the look of a deep dish pizza crust. Little blue silk ribbon bows are tied around the inside to give the impression of the English sky in summer. Strings of green bugle and glass beads outline the blue hand dyed cotton.
